Second-hand bookshops and their pre-loved treasures drawing more people
View(s):Skyrocketing prices of printing material and increased prices of newly printed books have come as a blessing in disguise to this handful of businessmen.
Second-hand bookshops along former McCallum Road (D R Wijewardene Mawatha) are seeing an increase in customers.
“We are getting many customers looking for second-hand international school books, and in general second-hand books in all three languages. Prices of newly-printed books have gone up by 30 percent. Therefore most people look to buy a second-hand copy at a lesser price,” said Sarath S P Hennadiga, who has been in the business for over 50 years.
“It’s a joy to see the younger generation is realising there are gems of knowledge hidden inside these stacks of second-hand books. Despite advancing technology, there are still those who believe in books in the physical form,” said Sarath.
Avanthi, a mother of three, said with international school fees increasing, parents are trying to manage spending by purchasing quality second-hand books.
Lack of space in houses are also resulting in many resorting to lending library systems in second-hand bookshops.
“Families migrating are also handing over their books to us, and this is leading to a growing collection of books,” said another vendor.
