Prof. Praneeth Abeysundara of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of
Sri Jayewardenepura has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Arts Council by the Education Minister.
The National Arts Council was formed in 1952, and in 2019 it was affiliated to the National Heritage, Performing Arts and Rural Arts Promotion State Ministry. Right now it is under the purview of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry.
The National Arts Council’s aims to develop knowledge, understanding and practice of the fine arts of Sri Lanka and increase the accessibility of works of art to more people in the country. It oversees about 11 advisory boards related to multiple genres of arts and media in the country.
