The only farm animal and equine hospital in the country, which took seven years to build at an estimated cost of Rs 85 million funded by the University Grants Commission, was declared open by Professor M D Lamawansa, Vice Chancellor – University of Peradeniya, at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The hospital is constructed along the lines of animal hospitals in New Zealand and Australia.
Professor Lamawansa said that it is the responsibility of the undergraduates to reap the benefits of the facilities afforded by the University and improve research in the country for the benefit of the people. The new hospital provided an opportunity, he added, for graduates and post-graduate students to improve their work in the field of veterinary medicine.
Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Professor P G Anil Pushpakumara said that this is the only national hospital dedicated to treating farm animals and equine in the country.
Dr M N M Fouzi, Head of the Aquaculture and Aquatic Animal Health Department proposed the vote of thanks at the event, attended by the Dons and the staff of the University.
