St. Peter’s, Thurstan battle for plumb
Defending champions St. Peter’s college Bambalapitiya will to retain the U-19 Tier Division One inter-school limited over cricket title when they take on defending runner-up Thurstan College today at the Colts ground. The match will start at 9.30a.m.
Looking at the performances of the two teams, the scale is in favor of the Bambalapitiya boys led by Nimuthu Gunawardena and Thurstan led by Shanikya Deshapriya needs to put in their best effort to challenge the tough opponent.
In the run up to the final St. Peter’s has so far remained unbeaten as they won all the eight matches in the first round and came out on top in their group. In the quarter final encounter they overcame Devapathiraja MMV Rathgama and then followed it up by getting the better of Mahinda College Galle in the semi-final.
Thurstan, on the other hand, ended as the third best team after the first round matches having won six of the eight matches they played before defeating traditional rivals Isipathana in the quarterfinal. They beat their arch-rivals St. Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa in the semifinal.
Eighteen teams divided into two groups participated in the first round of the tournament and each team played eight matches with the top two teams in the two groups qualifying to the knockout stage.
