Major anti-drugs programme for students from next year onwards
View(s):A major anti-drugs programme will be underway in and outside schools from January onwards, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
He said zonal directors have been sent directives to form drug prevention committees aimed at stopping students using drugs.
The committee will comprise zonal education directors, Police officers, health officials, divisional secretaries and a National Dangerous Drugs Control Board representative in addition to school representatives.
The committee would be entrusted to monitor if drugs were being distributed within the school either through canteens or nearby shops including food outlets. Random checks would be carried out at these locations.
Awareness programmes and other programmes in relation to the control of drugs spreading in schools would also be conducted.
“We will ensure students will not have access to drugs during school time, but parents will have to play a role in preventing students getting drugs from outside,” Mr. Premajayantha said.
He said students would also be informed about the recently passed regulations including the increase of penalties for drug related offences. -DWI
