Choro Calibre will come alive at most of the Colombo’s five star hotels and cafes during the festive season, making them the most sought after Choral Team of the island. ‘Choro Calibre’ was formed in 2009 by Shamal de Silva who has already got a string of accomplishments behind him. The Choir is poised to challenge boundaries of choral music and surprise the audience with their diverse talent. ‘Choro Calibre’ showcases the best of their choral singing and dancing across abroad range of segments encompassing Christmas music ranging from classics to modern to rock in a variety of styles and languages.
Shamal started his music career at the age of just 8, probably the youngest church organist at the time when he started playing at St. Paul’s Church in Waragoda. Later he took over the leadership of the College Choir in 2008 at his Alma-Mater, St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and went on to win ‘The Musician of the Year’ award in 2009 for his multi-disciplined musical contributions. Then over the years it evolved and developed making major contributions to the industry and satisfying thousands of clients with their live performances.
In the following years the Choir transformed into high standards in vocals and musical presentation with their strict and dedicated training. In 2012, Choro Calibre represented Sri Lanka and won three international awards at ‘Asia Cantate’ in Thailand. Since then, Choro Calibre has never looked back and continued on the impressive legacy of scintillating musical performances to deliver ultimate entertainment in Sri Lanka.
‘Choro Calibre’ hit the top when they released their version of Christmas cover song ‘Feliz Navidad’ recently. The cover song is a much loved Christmas pop song with an electronic colour and twist by Calibre. Feliz Navidad is written in 1970 by Puerto Rican singer-songwriter José Feliciano. With its simple, heartfelt lyrics—the traditional Spanish Christmas and New Year greeting ‘Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad’ means Merry Christmas, a ‘prosperous year and happiness’. The song has been heard on the radio by an estimated 3.8 billion people, according to Billboard, where it remains one of the top 10 best-performing songs on its Holiday 100 chart.
