The Government has banned the transportation of beef and mutton between districts and provinces in the wake of a large number of deaths of animals in the Northern and Eastern provinces in the past three days, officials said.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued a directive to suspend the transportation of beef and mutton to ensure public health safety, the President’s Media Division said yesterday.

The move came after more than 1,000 cattle and goats died after heavy rains, winds, and a drop in air temperature in the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Ampara, Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.

The samples of the dead animals have been sent to the Government Analyst Department.

In some areas, people were seen lighting fires to keep the cattle and goats warm.
