‘What Sweeter Music’: Philharmonic Choir upholds tradition
View(s):St Andrew’s Scots Kirk in Colombo 3 will resonate with the voices of one of Sri Lanka’s oldest active choral groups, the Colombo Philharmonic Choir on Friday, December 16. The choir which is in its 67th year since it was formed in 1955 under the baton of Dr Gerald Cooray will present an evening of carols and verse titled ‘What Sweeter Music’.
Conducted by Harin Amirthanathan, who has been the Choral Director of the choir since 2017, the Christmas service will be an important one for two-fold reasons. “What’s exciting about us singing a Christmas concert this year is that the very first performance by the Philharmonic was a Christmas concert. We’re also doing the Christmas Hymn in honour of Ralph Vaughn Williams who happened to be the first patron of the choir and whose 150th birthday is commemorated this year,” says Harin.
It has also been a few years since the Colombo Philharmonic Choir has had a fully-fledged performance, the last being a concert in July 2019 in remembrance of the Easter Sunday tragedy. Performing for the first time in three years, Harin reiterates the importance of keeping with the long-held traditions of the choir, “For me it’s important that we uphold all these traditions as a choir dedicated to singing music of this calibre.”
What Sweeter Music will take place on Friday, December 16 at 7 p.m. at St Andrew’s Scots Kirk, Colombo 3. Entrance will be free and a retiring collection will be taken for mission projects of St Andrew’s Scots Kirk.
