Recruitments and promotions among major plans for education sector: Minister
View(s):A major recruitment drive of teachers, a scheme of promotions and an offer for degree programmes have been planned for the coming year as part of the plans to improve the education sector.
Some 26,000 graduates currently working as development officers or those below 40 years in the public sector will be recruited as teachers after a competitive exam is held, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told the Education Times recently.
They will be recruited to the respective provinces, where they will be required to serve for an eight year period in the same province without transfers. Most of them will be recruited to teach science, maths, commerce stream subjects and Information Technology (IT) in the primary and O/L classes.
Cabinet approval along with Treasury approval had been granted for the recruitment.
Since the recruitment would be done among already serving public sector staff, so there would not be an additional financial burden on the Government, the Minister added.
As part of next year’s expansion programme for education, 6,000 teacher recruits would be provided the opportunity to follow a four year degree programme instead of the diploma course.
They would follow a four year degree and would be recruited as graduate teachers at the end of the four year degree programme.
Around 4,000 principal promotions too had been approved and would be granted within the next few months. Those already in the principal service would be eligible to apply for the promotions.
