Nearly 16 university students have been arrested so far in connection with the alleged assault on Peradeniya University’s former Vice Chancellor Prof. Athula Senaratne and his son, Police Media Spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa said.

On December 10, Prof. Senaratne and his son were assaulted by a group near his official residence and they were hospitalised.

According to the Police, some university students had an argument with Prof. Senaratne, who said his son’s car had collided with a parked motorcycle, and then about 300 university students attacked and damaged Prof. Senaratne’s official residence.

Moreover the Police said, the former Vice Chancellor’s wife and two other people who were in the residence at the time were also injured in the attack. Prof. Senaratne was taken to Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, while his son was taken to Kandy General Hospital.

The Peradeniya Police Station is conducting additional investigations into the incident, according to SSP Thalduwa.

Meanwhile, the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) has asked the Police to arrest the group accused of assaulting the former Vice Chancellor and his son.

According to the Federation, the crime was captured on the closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the former Vice Chancellor’s official residence.

In addition, the Peradeniya University administration has also launched an investigation into the crime.

Prof. Terrence Madhujith, the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, said academic activities of the students arrested in connection with the assault would be suspended.

“Investigations are being conducted by the university in collaboration with the Peradeniya Police. Those who are identified will face disciplinary action from the university, and the appropriate punishment would be given to them,” Prof. Madhujith said.
