St. Joseph’s and Visakha retain overall titles at 47th Schools Aquatic Championship 2022
St. Joseph’s accumulated an overall tally of 613 points, ahead of traditional rivals St. Peter’s College,
who finished at second with 402 points overall. Ananda College was placed third with 300 points. Others to follow in order were D.S. Senanayake College (222.5), Lycum Nugegoda (218), Royal College (200), Trinity College (194.5), Lyceum Wattala (184.5), St. Sebastian’s College (96.5) and Wesley College (84) in the Top 10.
Visakha accumulated 475 points to win the girls’ overall championship, followed by Ladies’ College, who collected 301.5 points to finish at second. Lyceum Wattala was placed third with 267 points, while Mahamaya Kandy (251.5), Musaeus College (197.5), Lyceum Gampaha (132), Lyceum Panadura (131), Anula Vidyalaya (115), St. Bridget’s Convent (114) and Sirimavo Bandaranaike College (113) followed in the Top 10.
In the Combined Team category, Lyceum Wattala topped the list with 451.5 points, followed by Lyceum Nugegoda (316.5), Lyceum Gampaha (191), Lyceum Panadura (159) and Dharmasoka Ambalangoda (126).
In swimming, D.K.G. Silva of Ananda College emerged the Under-20 Boys’ champion while its Girls’ title went to Ganga Seneviratne of Visakha Vidyalaya. Both accumulated 45 points each and accounted for three new record. Chris Pavithra of St. Peter’s was the best swimmer among the Under-18 boys as Hiruki de Silva of Gateway Colombo, who created three new records, was the winner of the girls’ title.
Wesley’s Adeesha Siriwardane was the best among boys in the Under-16 category, as with two new record Jessie Seneviratne of Holy Family Convent was the best among girls. M.M. Ekneligoda of Ananda broke two age group records and was named the Under-14 Boys’ champion, while Vandani Fernando of Kalutara Vidyalaya was the best girl swimmer of the same category.
Royal College and Visakha Vidyalaya won the Under-20 team titles in swimming, while Ananda College and Ladies’ College were the team champions of Under-18. St. Joseph’s and Holy Family Convent accounted for the Under-16 team titles, while the Joes went on to claim the Boys’ team title of the Under-14 category, in which the girls’ champions were Lyceum Gampaha. St. Peter’s won the Under-12 Boys’ team title and Visakha claimed its Girls’ title, as Lyceum Nugegoda and Mahamaya Kandy emerged boys’ and girls’ team champions in the Under-10 category respectively.
In addition, Royal College and Bishop’s College emerged overall Diving champions of the same event, which went on for five days last week. Royal gained 244 points overall in the Boys’ division, while Bishop’s won the Girls’ title with a total of 175 points.
Divers of Royal swept the individual age group titles as Matheesha Marambe annexed the Under-20 title with ease. Wenuka Kankanamge emerged the Under-18 champion, while Seniru Rodrigo and Mikhail Jayaweera were the champions of Under-16 and Under-14 respectively.
Senuri Wettasinghe of St. Bridget’s Convent won the Girls’ Under-20 individual championship. Kithmi Marambe of Bishop’s won the Under-18 title and her school mate Sineli Weerakoon was the Under-16 champion. Vinudi Kankanamge of Visakha won the Under-14 Girls’ title. Over 5,000 children representing over 200 schools took part at the five-day meet that was organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association and sponsored by Nestlé Milo.
