Additional buses and trains for the holiday season
View(s):The Sri Lanka Transport Board is ready to provide additional buses for people travelling to and from their villages during the festive season.
“There are long-distance SLTB buses. But we have prepared additional buses if the crowds increase,” Deputy General Manager (Operations), Panduka Swarnahansa, told the Sunday Times.
The programme is already underway, having started on Friday, when people started leaving for their homes and would continue into the new year when people would be returning, he said.
Lanka Private Bus Owners Association Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said there was an increase in crowds travelling on Friday evening and Saturday morning.
The Department of Railways has arranged eight trains to and from Colombo for the festive season.
Locomotive Operating Engineers Union president K. A. U. Konthasinghe said trains are overcrowded now. “With petrol costs and highway fares increasing, people are opting more and more to travel by train to their villages. Due to reservations first and second classes are alright, but the other carriages are fully-packed”, Mr Konthasinghe said.
Citing an example of a man recently falling from a train on the coastal line due to overcrowding he said the number of trains are inadequate to meet the increased demand for trains travel.
