As the air quality of Colombo and several other areas again reached unhealthy levels, the situation will continue with a slight increase in air pollution in the next few days, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) said.

According to the NBRO, the air quality could drop to an unsafe level due to an increase in dust particles in the atmosphere. This would result in foggy or misty conditions in the coming days.

One of the main causes of Sri Lanka’s air pollution was an influx of dust particles carried by strong winds from India, the NBRO said. “This situation may change from time to time depending on the weather conditions, but in the next few days there could be a slight increase in air pollution,” the NBRO advised.

Yesterday, Colombo’s air quality was at an unhealthy 166, according to the US Air Quality Index (AQI). Negombo had an AQI value of 173, Gampaha 165, Dambulla 137, Kandy 91, Ambalantota 82 and Nuwara Eliya 41.

According to the NBRO, the regions that are experiencing air quality between 150 and 200 are categorised as unhealthy.

If the air quality is deteriorating there are various precautionary measures that need to be adhered to. Children and older individuals who are more vulnerable should receive special protection. Those who are suffering from respiratory, lung, or heart ailments should also take precautions.

People with compromised health are advised to avoid extended outdoor work or activity if the air quality is in the unhealthy or red range (151-200). Everyone else who is healthy should cut back on their time spent outside.
