Sculptors are not an exception to those oppressed by the rapidly increasing prices; faced by an inability to obtain raw materials.

Sebastian Anura, a sculptor of primarily Catholic images in Mattakkuliya, who specialises in a rare method used in India, expressed his distress. “The raw items we bought for Rs 750 are Rs 2,500 or Rs 3,000 now. There are many people who have been affected by the situation and a slight help to continue our business would be appreciated,” he said.

He has been a sculptor for nine years and inherited the business from his parents, who had learned sculpture in India.

Currently, there are five persons working in the business, including Sebastian Anura and his brother, whose lives are dependent upon the business.

The raw materials are made into a pulp, dried and removed from the mold, cleaned, dried again and finally painted.

High population density and urbanisation have forced the drying process to be conducted on the rooftop of the business.
