St. Joseph Vaz and Ave Maria claim Sir John Tarbat Junior championship
St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa and Ave Maria Convent, Negombo emerged champions in Boys’ and Girls’ segments respectively at the Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Junior Schools Athletic Championship 2022, concluded at Diyagama.
Boys’ champions, St. Joseph Vaz, Wennappuwa accumulated 64 points to dominate the rest, as Maris Stella College, Negombo finished at second position with 50 points. In the Girls’ category eventual champions Ave Maria Convent, Negombo finished with a tally of 68 points, to overcome Ambagamuwa Central College, who finished close behind at second position with 65 points.
Thushara Mendis of Lyceum International School, who finished with 853 points, was adjudged the Best Male Athlete while V.P.N. Samadhi of Vijitha Central College, Dickwella accumulated 907 points to become the Best Female Athlete of the three-day competition. In addition 16 new records were established while one record was equaled.
The event, organised by Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association (SLSAA), attracted over 3000 participants of age groups between Under-12 to Under-15 from schools all over the country.
The highlight of this year’s event was awarding of sports scholarships to 15 exceptionally well performing athletes nominated by the SLSAA. Accordingly, P.S. Jaythilaka of Thurstan College, R.P.D.A.T. Rajapaksha of Sir John Kotalawala MV, Kurunegala, E.S.D. Anuhas of Bodagama MV, Thanamalwila, G.I. Arthavidu of D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo, R. Careem of Lyceum International, Panadura, H.M.N. Madushani Herath of Nannapuruwa MV, Bibila, Sithuli Sadithya of Samudradevi BV, Nugegoda, W.M.K.N. Wickramasinghe of Wickramabahu NS, Gampola, W. Jayavi Ranhinda of Royal College, Panadura, S. Kosala of Lyceum International, Wattala, E. Vishwa Tharuka of Rahula College, Matara, K.L.A. Akalanka of Ambagamuwa Central, D.M.M. Shyamal of Kuliyapitiya Central, D.M.M.P. Dunusinghe of Sir John Kotalawala MV, Kurunegala and Dananjana Ranasgalla of Lyceum International,Y akkala received scholarships to pursue their future endeavours in sports.
