The offering of new rice to the sacred tooth relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa took place in the inner shrine room of the temple on Friday.
Harvested from the paddy fields of the maligawa, 84 measures of rice was offered to the relic.
The offering was brought to the temple four days prior to the ceremony, from the temple’s graneries at Pallekelle.
On the same day rice was distributed to the devalas and temples which come under the purview of the Maligawa.
The ritual took place with the participation of Asgiriya chapter Anunayake Ven. Wendaruve Upali thera, Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela and Panditha Naranpanawe Ananda thera. Every year, the first harvest from the paddy fields belonging to the temple is offered to the sacred tooth relic on duruthu poya day.
This ritual has taken place since the days of the kings of the Kandyan Kingdom.
