Urban Council minor staff gambling: UC Chairman

Chairman of the Maharagama Urban Council, Tiraj Lakruwan Piyarathne said that a new official should be appointed immediately to control the minor staff as they were gambling during office time.
At the council meeting held on Tuesday, the chairman revealed that 150 minor staff members have started to engage in gambling within the council premises during work days.
He explained that the staff played cards after 3 pm each work day. He had also received information that some administrative officials of the council were aiding minor staff to engage in gambling.
“There is no control within the council, if one person loses there can be stabbing incidents; that would completely ruin the reputation of the council,” he said.
He added that such incidents had happened before, therefore, some official needs to be appointed to stop employees gambling.
Mr Piyarathne added that if an incident were to occur, the blame would fall on him and he will be held accountable.
He pointed out that the council operates on tax payer money and, therefore, he is responsible for the activities occurring at the council.
“I am responsible if something happens; I would dissolve the Maharagama Urban Council or postpone the Council meetings if the minor staff persist to gamble within council premises,”
he stressed.
Mr Piyarathne also said that the council can be dissolved anytime, therefore every member should be have responsibly.
