Young criminals operating through WhatsApp group arrested
View(s):A group of six youths who operated via a WhatsApp group to carry out criminal activities were arrested yesterday.
A senior official of the Police Special Task Force said that they identified six 18-year-old boys who had engaged in violent behaviour in Vavuniya after one of them was arrested in the Puvarasankulam area for possession of illegal drug pills on Thursday, January 5.
The phone of the 18-year-old arrested suspect was searched by the Police, while he was questioned. When the phone was searched they had come across some photographs of swords.
Upon further investigation of the phone’s content, the Police discovered a WhatsApp group in the phone named “Geththu Pasanga” (Swag Boys) which included the contact information of other boys of the group.
Following that, the STF raided the members of the group. Investigations also revealed that the members were involved in violent acts in Puvarasankulam, Thattankulam and Settikulam.
The six suspects were arrested with four mobile phones, drug pills, sharp weapons including swords which were handed over to the Puvarasankulam Police station for further investigation.
The raids were conducted by a group of STF officers of the Vavuniya Camp including Inspector A M P N Adhikari under the supervision of Commander of the Vavuniya Camp Inspector A R T A Amarasinghe.
