View(s):My only son, my greatest treasure
Laurie Peiris
The special bond between my son Laurie and myself was clear to anyone even at first sight.
He was my only child and I doted on him. From childhood, he was there right beside me if anything needed doing in the home. His caring ways grew as more salt and pepper was seen in the hairs on my head.
The only time we disagreed was when at the age of seven, I tried to give him his first music lesson on our piano. Putting his hands together he said “Mama, I don’t want to play the piano, I want to play cricket.”
My hopes of seeing him as an accomplished pianist and musician were hit for a six and in a fit of pique, I said, “If that’s what you want, that’s what you get” and stormed out. The look on his face as he realised he had hurt me is still before my eyes.
The music lesson stopped. Cricket lessons began. We never spoke of music again.
My greatest treasure
Loved beyond measure
Sharer of my tears and smiles
Walking together
In fair or foul weather
With you, I could walk every mile.
Now alone and so lonely
I think of you only taking the days as they come
Pining and grieving
My eyes are streaming
For you, my only child, my son.
