An intense moment from Pasmaha Ballun

The Academic Players of the Drama & Theatre and Image Arts Unit of the University of Kelaniya will present a Drama Festival at the University this week.

The University’s Drama and Theatre Honours Degree programme begun in 1998, will be completing 25 years this year and some renowned thespians who are Kelaniya alumni will be performing.

The festival begins on January 9 with an adaptation of Prof. Sarachchandra’s renowned “Sinhabahu” which is prescribed for schools and the tertiary education syllabus. The festival then features three plays created and adapted by the students themselves. Nagamandala is an Indian drama written by Girish Karnard based on two Indian folktales. Directed by Priyankara Rathnayake and Sanjeeva Gunaratne, it will be staged on January 10 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Based on Arthur Miller’s ‘All My Sons’, the play ‘Man Athule Ghathakayek’, directed by Chamodi Dayawansa and supervised by Anuradha Subasinghe, will be staged on January 11 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Pasmaha Ballun, a Sinhala adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s ‘The Measures Taken’, written by Vijitha Gunaratne and directed by Sampath Perera, will go on the boards on January 12 at 4 p.m and 7 p.m.

“Rathu wes muhuna”, a new interpretation of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex will be performed on January 25 and 26 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. under the direction of Priyankara Ratnayake.

Senior lecturer Anuradha Subasinghe, lecturers Sampath Perera and Sanjeeva Gunaratne have organised this drama festival under the guidance of Professor Nilanthi Silva, Dr. Sudath Senarath, Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, senior lecturer Upul Jayaratne, and senior lecturer Priyankara Ratnayake.

Tickets are priced at Rs. 300, 500 and 1000 for Sinhabahu and Rathu Wesmuhunu. For Naagamandala, All My Sons and Pasmaha Belum, all seats are Rs 200.
