The Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology ( APIIT) committed 7500 tree pledge to support Rotary’s drive for Environment Sustainability in the year 2023.  Rotary Global President Jennifer Jones made a decisive call on her recent tour of ‘Imagine Sri Lanka’ in the backdrop of the signature planting of the tree at WTC in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Present at the function was the District Governor for Rotary Sri Lanka and Maldives Pubudu De Soyza and 1st female Governor of Rotary Sri Lanka Gowri Rajan.

The only education institute to say yes to the environment was the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology( APIIT) with a parcel of 7500 trees which will branded ‘ what is your tree story’. The ROTARACT Club of APIIT will champion the tree story drive as research reveals that every human being have a emotional bond with a. Tree. The stories so far say ‘ I met my class mates under the Mara tree, some say ‘ I used to meet my girl friend every Saturday near the Bo Tree’ a respected CEO of a large local company said ‘ if not for a tree that I held unto, I would have been swept to the sea when the tsunami struck Nilaveli’ said the Chairperson of the Rotary 1 Million Project Gowri Rajan. The event staged by the Securities and Exchange commission( SEC) with the top corporates resulted in a pledge of over fifty thousand trees with LIOC and Sunshine Holdings pledging a Rs. 1 million for the economy with a parcel of 10,000 trees each. The CEO of SEC Rajeeva Bandaranayake said ‘ we must be triple bottom line driven’ which means Profits, People and Planet driven to bring back the lost glory of Sri Lanka given that the tree cover which was 53% way back in 1990 is reported by the United Nations has dwindled down to 29% as at 2012 report he said.

The Rotary Global Chief Jennifer Jones commented that in COP17 it was agreed that a special fund be set for countries that are affected due to environmental pollution. We from Rotary must drive the agenda with great initiatives like the Rotary 1 million tree planting project.

Dr Rohantha Athukorala an architect of the ‘ 1 million Rotary Tree project’ commented that The agricultural partner- Kelani Valley Plantations being the dedicated organization for planting and maintenance means there is credibility to the project as the entity is UN Global compact and Rain Forest Alliance certified, gives added strength to the project he said. We have almost half a million trees being contracted said The District Governor Rotary Sri Lanka & Maldives Eng Pubudu De Soyza.
