EDEX Nenapahana joined hands with Sri Lanka Association of Australia Awards Alumni (SLAAAA), in reaching out to rural underprivileged schools in its envisioned journey towards ‘Empowering Sri Lankan youth to be globally competitive’.

Below four deserving schools in Alawwa Zonal Education Division in Kurunegala District, were selected for this project, in coordination with Alawwa Divisional Secretariat, which was carried out on 21st November 2022.

  • Galdeniya Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kappitiwilana;
  • Kandegedara Maha Vidyalaya, Maharachchimulla;
  • Galgamuwa Maha Vidyalaya, Maharachchimulla;
  • Aandiyadeniya Primary School, Maharachchimulla

Valuable library books were donated to the respective schools, which were well received by them all with much gratitude. “This is the first set of books we have received for our schoolchildren. We are grateful for the concern shown towards a very small remote school like ours. This book donation will be a great stepping stone for the future development of these children”, Principal of Aandiyadeniya Primary School said.

Principal of Galdeniya Kanishta Vidyalaya said “A good part of our school got submerged during a recent flood, and the limited books and equipment the school had were destroyed and lost. This support we have received, certainly gives the children as well as the staff a tremendous morale boost to resume their activities”.

In addition to the book donation, a number of coconut plants were distributed among selected families of schoolchildren, in coordination with Alawwa Divisional Secretariat. Much needed awareness sessions were also organised as part of this project which were conducted by doctors and professionals to educate children and parents on the topics of Food Nutrition and Entrepreneurship.

Since its inception in 2012, EDEX Nenapahana, the CSR arm of Royal College Union Colombo, has been a past pupils’ fraternity which is dedicated to the cause of providing necessary support and guidance to students from marginalised and deprived backgrounds in the country. It has so far reached out to over 135 schools in 21 districts across the island.

Sri Lanka Association of Australia Awards Alumni (SLAAAA) is an alumni association for all Australia Awards awardees from Sri Lanka. The SLAAAA operates with a mission to provide support and services to the wider community while bridging the gap through collaboration and maintaining professional integrity and respect.
