University students to swear oath against ragging
View(s):All students entering State universities would have to take an oath assuring they would not engage in ragging of students.
Any involvement in ragging would make them liable for cancellation of their student membership, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Sampath Amaratunga told Education Times.
New entrants have to take the oath at registration as well as at their respective universities as part of measures taken to eradicate ragging from campuses.
The move comes as directions have gone out to universities to make arrangements to commence the new academic year next month.
The UGC plans to enlist 42,500 students for the new academic year.
The decision to obtain an oath from new entrants has been taken following consultations with several stakeholders, including the Human Rights Commission, Ministry of Law and Order and the Attorney General’s Department.
The UGC and respective universities have been discussing ways to reduce ragging, which has turned out to be a major problem in carrying out academic activities in universities.
The latest ragging incidents were reported from the University of Peradeniya and the Buddhist and Pali University in Homagama where student activities were interrupted.
University sources said that in recent months there has been a change in attitude among students who have been sending complaints about ragging incidents where they have shared information about ragging incidents. They said that this was in contrast to the situation where no information was received previously. -DWI
