A new Deputy Chairman for the Peliyagoda Urban Council was elected from the United National Party (UNP ) after the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Chairman of the Urban Council and one other member voted in favour of the UNP.

The election to elect a Deputy Chairman to the Peliyagoda UC was held last Thursday as the council was operating for one month without a Deputy Chairman.

Analysts said the voting was a reflection of the SLPP-UNP understanding being reached to contest local elections together.

Nandadewa Hemapriya (SLFP), the previous Deputy Chairman who held the position, had joined the SLPP. Therefore he was removed from the position held within the party, and as result the position was vacant.

The UC’s Chairman Ananda Pushapakumara, who also was from the SLPP, informed Local Government Commissioner A.D.P.I Prasanna of the situation.

Therefore an election was held within the council with the presence of the Local Government Commissioner. Three candidates–A.P Nilantha Perera (SLPP), Ruwan Nishantha (UNP) and Anthony Biyanwila (UNP)–initially came forward as candidates and obtained 04, 06 and 03 votes respectively.

Therefore the Commissioner had said that as none of the candidates had obtained 50 percent pf votes out of the 16 council members, only two candidates were allowed to face the election for the second time removing Anthony Biyanwil.

As a result, UNP candidate Ruwan Nishantha obtained seven votes while the SLPP candidate obtained five votes mirroring the political situation in the country.

The UNP member who obtained the victory by two votes and gained the Deputy Chairmanship too obtained two votes from UC Chairman Ananda Pushpakumara and SLPP member S.A Shelton Perera.

SLFP member Ganga Dilrukshi refrained from voting while JVP member Shantha Kumara was absent. Meanwhile Sarath Ananda who represented the SLPP left the council premises while the election was held.
