Sri Lanka is planning to attract foreign students by establishing a national academy on wildlife conservation and zoo management.
According to the Ministry of Wildlife, about 300 groups of foreign students from Australia, China, Czechoslovakia, India, Latvia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Pakistan, Spain, and the United Kingdom have arrived in the country to experience training in the field of wildlife conservation and zoo management.
All arrangements have been made to draft a Cabinet paper for the establishment of the higher education institute that will come under the purview of the Department of National Zoological Gardens. The Ministry plans to bring in foreign exchange by introducing internationally-accepted training courses.
The academy is to serve both local and foreign students and introduce internationally-accepted practical and theory programmes in fields such as animal husbandry, zoo management, mahout training, aquatic species management, and animal management skills.
The National Zoological Garden in Dehiwala, Ridiyagama Safari Park, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, and Pinnawala Zoo coming under the Department of National Zoological Gardens are to be used for observation and studies.
