View(s):A bouquet to Welisara staff
I am a retired accountant. I was hospitalised at the Chest Hospital, Welisara, Ward No. 1 for a respiratory tract infection and treated at the hospital for ten days. This was the first time I was receiving treatment at a government hospital.
My observations during my short stay in hospital were that the attitudes of the medical staff contribute tremendously towards curing the sick. They are kind to the patients and always show their willingness to assist patients with a positive attitude to recover from their ailments. The way they address the patients and the kind manner in which they speak make the patients feel at home.
Timely treatments and follow-ups with care are apparent in their daily routine. In the ten days I spent at the hospital I never saw a Dr or nurse addressing a patient in a brusque way even when the patient was not co-operating with their instructions. They treated them with sympathy and patience. Every effort was also taken to keep the wards clean and the systematic maintenance and pleasant management of the hospital is a clear indication of how even limited resources could be utilised especially for the poorer patients to obtain free medical facilities in a satisfactory way.
This is a tribute to the doctors, nurses and related staff for their dedicated contribution and care for the welfare of the patients.

Power cuts: Spread the pain equitably
I protested to the PUCSL on December 30, 2022, that many residents suffer power cuts while in several parts of Colombo and its suburbs no cuts were imposed. I asked the regulator to address this injustice and “spread the pain” equitably across all, rather than inflicting it on some only.
For reasons unknown (there are rumours that an “important person” has moved into our area temporarily), the “Group” within which we fall did not experience power cuts from January 8-16, 2023, while many others continued to suffer them.
This brief “exemption” shows how unfairly these decisions are taken. Selective exemption (for whatever reason) is not acceptable; an equitable sharing of the pain across the board is essential.
Why can’t the principles of equity be rigidly applied in our dear land, where governance is sadly lacking?
