Power sector regulator the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has informed the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) in writing that it will not approve any requests for scheduled power cuts from January 26 to February 17 in order to safeguard the human rights of candidates sitting for the GCE A/L Examination.

In a letter to CEB, PUCSL reminded it had approved all requests made by CEB for scheduled power cuts from February 18, 2022 to January 26, 2023. “However, the Commission will not approve any scheduled power interruption from January 26, 2023 until February 17, 2023 in order to safeguard the rights of the 331,709 candidates who sit for the GCE A/L Examination,” states the letter, signed by PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake.

Accordingly, PUCSL has directed CEB to provide uninterrupted power supply until February 17 and has also informed it not to submit requests for approval for scheduled power interruptions until that date.

The Commission has also informed CEB that it will be legally held responsible if power interruptions are imposed during the aforesaid period.
