Emeritus Archbishop Oswald Gomis passes away; funeral tomorrow
View(s):The funeral of Colombo’s Emeritus Archbishop Oswald Gomis will take place tomorrow in the Cathedral Crypt, Archbishop’s House in Borella.
A Requiem Mass will be held at 3 pm at St Lucia’s Cathedral Kotahena before the funeral procession leaves for Borella.
Rev Dr Gomis passed away on Friday. His remains were placed at St Anne’s Church, Piliapitiya, Kelaniya until noon yesterday before being taken to St Joseph’s Cathedral in Anuradhapura.
The remains will be placed at St Lucia’s Cathedral, Kotahena after 5 p.m. today.
Rev Dr Gomis was instrumental in establishing around 15 schools, international schools and technical institutions in Sri Lanka.
He was ordained in 1958 at St Lucia’s Cathedral. He served as Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo from 1968 to 1996 and Bishop of Anuradhapura from 1996 until being installed as Archbishop of Colombo in 2002. He retired in 2009.
