As Sri Lanka yesterday marked its 75th anniversary of independence from British rule, Kandy’s last king Sri Wickrema Rajasinha was commemorated in the South Indian city of Vellore on January 30.

The king died 191 years ago and his descendants still conduct religious services to mark his death.

The ashes of the king and the queen are interred in a place called Muttu Mandapam.

The place where the king was kept in custody is a mansion called Kandy Mahal, a house that belonged to Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. The Kandy king and some of his noble men had been held there in captivity for 16 years.

The king had died at the age of 52 from complications arising from indigestion. His remains were burnt on the banks of Palar River and a monument in the Tamil tradition was erected during the British period. Since then, the commemoration of the deaths of the royal family has been observed according to Hindu rites.
