Religious observances mark independence event

The “Janaraja Perahera” to commemorate the 75th Independence Day would be held on February 19 around the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.

Secretary of the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Somarata Vidanapathirana said that the Perahera would be held under State sponsorship and would be a tourist attraction as well.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited and obtained blessings of the Tooth Relic in Kandy on Wednesday for the 75th Independence day. The President also attended a Buddhist Paritta ceremony on top of the Victoria dam organised by the Mahanayake Agga Maha Pandita Venerable Dodampahala Chandasiri Thero.

A Buddhist paritta ceremony for the 75th Independence Day was held on Friday at the Matale Divisional Secretariat office attended by the Matale Sangha Nayake Venerable Mahalakotuwe Wimaladhamma Thero.

A Hindu religious ceremony was held at the Koneswaram Kovil on Friday attended by the Minister of Fisheries, Douglas Devananda.

Many other religious ceremonies were held island-wide to commemorate the 75th Independence Day.

The Catholic service was held at St Fathima Church Maradana.

An Islam religious ceremony was held at the Colombo Grand Mosque yesterday attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Sabry.

The All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama released a letter commemorating the 75th Independence Day yesterday stating “We pray that all citizens of our country be able to enjoy their rights and freedoms while upholding peace and harmony.”
