A group of 14 baby whales were spotted at the Kalpitiya beach last morning by residents who informed the Kalpitiya Wildlife Site Security Office.

Officials of the Wildlife Office and locals thereafter worked together and released 11 whales back into the sea. Three were already dead. A fisherman said  it was challenging to  lead them all to the sea.

“They were identified as Pilot Whales. It has been assumed that the alteration of ocean currents stranded them on the beach,” said Mr Upali Kumarathunga, the Site Security Officer, Kalpitiya Wildlife Office.   He added it was believed that the three may have died due to lack of sufficient oxygen. A post-mortem examination is to be conducted.
