Prof. Abeywardane’s presentation is an analytical and interpretative study in the fields of archaeology and heritage utilizing state-of-art technology in digital applications. The use of this technology over large landscapes, ecosystems and demographic zones has provided a multi and cross-disciplinary perspective in the management and protection of heritage resources.
He will present the GIS based heritage inventory developed for the World Heritage site of Anuradhapura with the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. The talk will feature the vivid physical zones (plains and riverine systems), uneven landscapes, biodiversity areas and concentration of heritage sites representing religious, secular and varying architectural remains.
Prof. Abeywardane obtained a first-class Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology (Hons) from the University of Peradeniya and a Master of Science in GIS and remote sensing from the Post Graduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya. His PhD in Landscape Archaeology was from the Freie University, Berlin, Germany. He is an ICCROM alumnus and had his heritage and GIS education in Japan, Thailand and India. He has published more than 30 scientific papers and several books.
