Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore marks 75th anniversary of independence

The Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore commemorated the 75th anniversary of independence on February 4 and 6 with the participation of high-level representatives from the government of Singapore, diplomatic corps, members of the business community, professionals, media personnel and the Lankan expatriate community.

High Commissioner Sashikala Premawardhane said that 2023 will be a crucial year for Sri Lanka in achieving economic recovery and stressed the need for everyone’s support for the efforts taken by the government to overcome challenges. The High Commissioner appreciated the contribution of the Lankan expatriate community towards the economic development of the country and requested all overseas Lankans to unite for the betterment of the motherland.

A diplomatic reception was hosted at the official residence of the High Commissioner for over 200 guests with the participation of a large number of heads of mission, Singapore government officials, the diplomatic corps, investors and business contacts, professionals from diverse disciplines and academia in Singapore. Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office of Singapore Desmond Tan was guest of honour.

Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Premawardhane emphasised that the multi-faceted Singapore-Sri Lanka relationship is underpinned by high-level cooperation, shared cultural values and strong people-to-people linkages. She invited those present to invest, trade and travel to Sri Lanka.

Minster of State Desmond Tan stated that Singapore and Sri Lanka have enjoyed longstanding, friendly relations for centuries built on a firm cultural and historic foundation. The minister acknowledged the significant contributions made by Lankans towards developing Singapore in diverse sectors including education, law and sports. The minister added that the trade links between the two countries have continued to deepen.

The culinary theme for the evening was Sri Lankan Street Food, with guests being treated to the unique and diverse street cuisine of the country.
