Education reforms geared to introducing job-oriented courses
View(s):Education reforms, including new subjects, are to be introduced from next year, the Education Ministry has decided.
A pilot project for the programme will commence in April and would be continued for a nine-month period before implementation. The reforms will cover classes from Grade 1 to GCE O/L.
The main changes will take place for Grade 1, Grade 6 and Grade 10.
The reforms are part of an educational transformation which takes place every eight years and includes a revision of the syllabus.
Artificial Intelligence, Robotic Technology, 3D Printing, Drone Technology, Nanotechnology, Green Energy, Renewable Energy and Driverless Vehicle Technology will be among the new subjects.
The new subjects will be gradually introduced from Grade 6 onwards and up to O/L.
Some of the older subjects have been removed from the syllabuses.
For Primary classes, activity-based oral English will be introduced.
Discussions are underway with university authorities on introducing some of the new subjects for A/L classes as well.
Head of the National Institute of Education Dr Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne said that the objective of the revision would be to allow students to follow job-oriented courses.
