Sepal Amarasinghe released with stern warning
The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday concluded the case against social media activist Sepal Amarasinghe and released him from remand custody after he tendered an unconditional apology over defamatory statements he made regarding the Sacred Tooth Relic.
Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis released Mr. Amarasinghe with the consent of the Attorney General’s Department after he tendered an unconditional apology in court to the complainants who had lodged police complaints against him and considering a written assurance given by him that he will not make such statements in future.
Senior Deputy Solicitor General (SDSG) Dileepa Peiris, appearing for the AG, said the suspect had hurt the sentiments of Buddhists with his statements.
However, given that the suspect has stated he genuinely regrets his actions and considering that he has tendered an unconditional apology including to the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters, SDSG Peiris said the AG will take no further action against the suspect.
Accordingly, Chief Magistrate Alwis released Mr. Amarasinghe after sternly warning him to be more responsible when making religiously sensitive statements.
