Lankan surgeon recipient of US award
View(s):Dr Kadirawel Iswara is the recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Clinician Award in Private Practice given by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). The prize honours a member of the practicing community who combines the art of medicine with the skills demanded by the scientific body of knowledge in service to their patients. Dr Iswara has been a clinical leader at Maimonides Health for many years, providing outstanding care to patients in his busy practice, while also helping to train multiple generations of budding gastroenterologists and shaping their future careers. The presentation is scheduled to take place May 7 at a formal ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago.
Dr Iswara graduated with honours from the Medical School at Peradeniya in 1968. He worked at the General Hospital Colombo till 1970 and moved to the Coney Island hospital in New York. He completed his training at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York and has been practicing since 1976 after finishing training in gastroenterology. He was in military deployment during the 1990-1991 Gulf War and is currently a honorary surgeon with the New York City Police Department.
