Exams to recruit teachers must be held on schedule: Minister
View(s):Education Minister Susil Premajayantha emphasised the need to ensure the proposed examinations to recruit teachers is held on schedule for the smooth functioning of the education system.
The Minister told Education Times that he was planning to have the exams this month so that some 26,000 teachers could be recruited as soon as possible.
Already 52,000 persons have sent in their applications. The recruitment is restricted to those already in the public service.
This restriction was placed as the Government decided that no new recruitments, which were a burden on the Treasury, would be carried out. Since these applicants are already in service it would not be an additional burden to the Treasury.
Minister Premajayantha said some people were of the opinion that those who recently passed out from Universities should be given an opportunity to apply, but due to financial restrictions such an opportunity could not be given at this point.
He said that a case had been filed but it was dismissed, while another group has claimed they would go to courts.
Minister Premajayantha stressed that any delay in conducting the examination would have an impact on filling the vacancies in schools. He said that the 26,000 vacancies need to be filled without delay. (DWI)
