Move to increase paper marking allowance, make it tax free

View(s):

A Cabinet paper on increasing allowances for teachers and university lecturers involved in marking GCE (A/L) answer scripts will be taken up at next week’s meeting. The move comes following protests that the sum paid was insufficient.

The Cabinet paper included a recommendation that the allowances for lecturers be exempted from tax. The Education Ministry is faced with a shortage of persons to correct papers.

Though 19,000 teachers and lecturers are required for paper marking, only 14,000 have applied so far.

“We believe that if the allowance is increased there would be more applicants,” a senior official said. The marking of the answer scripts have already been delayed; a further delay could have an impact on the dates for the GCE (O/L) exam, he added. (DWI)
