A mother had reportedly thrown her one-and- a-half year-old child into a shrimp tank in the Udappuwa area to take revenge on her husband following a dispute. A worker, however, managed to rescue the child, police said.
The wife of a labourer working in the shrimp farm in Kattakaduwa, Uduppuwa, had reportedly pushed the child into the tank and had pretended the infant had gone missing.
However, an employee at the same shrimp farm had seen the child struggling in the tank and had rescued the infant.
The child was immediately rushed to the Puttalam Base Hospital and later transferred to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
A spokesperson for Kurunegala Hospital said the child’s condition was improving.
According to police the woman had said that she was living in a shack at the shrimp farm with her husband and child and following an argument with her husband she had pushed the child into the shrimp tank to take revenge on him.
The 20-year-old mother of one was arrested by the Udappuwa police and was due to be produced in court.
