Despite being opened more than four months ago, the toilet complex still has no water supply

A row has broken out over the failure of the Maharagama Urban Council to provide water for the Maharagama town’s rebuilt public toilet complex. The complex continues to remain without water more than four months after being opened to the people.

More than 2500 merchants who sell textiles and people who visit the Maharagama town face difficulties as they are unable to use the toilets.

The Maharagama UC’s former Chairperson Kanthi Kodikara blamed current Chairman Tiraj Lakruwan Piyaratne over the failure to provide water to the new toilet complex. She said it was under Mr. Piyaratne’s orders that the previous public toilet complex was demolished to make way for a new one.

Mr. Piyaratne for his part, claimed he cannot connect the water supply to the toilet complex now, because the local council election had been called. Such an action could be interpreted as him trying to obtain an unfair political advantage and hence, a violation of election law.

“I tried to get it done before the election was called but failed. I cannot do it now because the election has been called,” he said.

Ms. Kodikara is threatening to arrange a people’s protest against the Chairman if he did not take steps to connect a water supply to the toilet complex, before the end of the month.
