Residents of Alawatura village in Bulathkohupitiya raise concerns over the preservation of the Alawatura Ganegoda Viharaya, as the temple, and its wall paintings, are under threat of being destroyed.

They say that the temple, which is not inhabited by any monk, has become a den for treasure hunters and has not been subjected to preservation efforts.

The temple has wall art and carvings which mirror the style of the Gadoladeniya and Lankathilaka viharas. The temple, believed to date back to the 14 Century according to legend, had been built by a monk named Dharmakeerthi who arrived from South India.
