MICE Expo 2023 a big push for Sri Lanka Tourism
Reaffirming Sri Lanka’s former tagline, the Tourism Minister Harin Fernando insisted the island nation is a country unlike any other and a diversified nation.
In an attempt to rectify his statement (on the Maldives) made at the German Travel fair ITB in Berlin recently, the Minister pointed out that he needed to apologise to the Maldives. Minister Fernando was speaking at Tuesday’s inauguration of the Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2023 held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo in the presence of tourism industry delegates from other markets.
The Minister noted that the increased adverse publicity is causing much anxiety among the industry in Sri Lanka and called on the delegates to witness the country.
The Minister also pointed out that Sri Lanka continues to attract clientele from India including from the film industry to make their movies and the media channels to promote northern Jaffna as part of a series of documentaries.
This event was a 3-day event organised by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB), SriLankan Airlines and Sri Lanka Association of Professional Conference, Exhibition and Events Organisers (SLAPCEO).
SriLankan Airlines Head of Worldwide Sales and Marketing Dimuthu Tennakoon said the airline handles 65 per cent of the total MICE traffic to the country.
He pointed out that they were in India with a wide presence as the airline operates daily flights to nine locations in India.
This is first MICE expo event held that includes the participation of about 100 delegates from around the world.
SLAPCEO head Imran Hassan told the Business Times that the event’s participants were selected to limit the number of attendees.
