Pera University willing to help develop Kandy town

The University of Peradeniya does not come under the purview of the Kandy Municipal Council, said the university’s vice chancellor Prof. M. D. Lamawansa. He made this statement recently at a meeting with local authorities who sought his advice on how the university could contribute to the development of the Kandy area.
He said 95 percent of the university was under the purview of a pradeshiya sabhawa, and even though there had been discussions on this matter, no progress was made.
However, the vice chancellor added that the university was willing to help the Municipal Council despite this issue.
Prof. Lamawansa said when the university was established, Sir Arunachalam Ramananthan had said it should be named after the town in which it was situated, which was how it was given the name University of Peradeniya.
It was also noted during the discussions that the university should have a seat in the Kandy MC for one of its representatives, so it could contribute to the development of the historic Kandy town.
The Professor added that it would be necessary for the Local Authority Ordinance to be amended, before a seat could be offered to a university representative.
