One of the most frustrating issues faced by the public who travel this country’s roads on a daily basis is the poor condition of many of them. A frequent complaint is that roads which are dug to lay water connections are rarely repaired properly.

The lack of proper repairs means that sections of well-carpeted roads become difficult to travel on, with frequent potholes and broken sections of road. Heavy rain further erodes these broken sections of the road and before long, the road becomes a nightmare for area residents and those who have to travel along it.

The fault lies mainly with the local councils. When a consumer applies for a water connection from the local authority, he or she has to pay that authority to both dig up the road to lay the connection and to repair it afterwards. What has seemingly been happening though, is that while workers from the local authority dig up the road to enable the connection to be made, they don’t usually return to repair it.

Our photographer captured numerous locations coming under the Kaduwela Municipal Council where roads have not been properly repaired after giving water connections.
