Capturing a city in the grip of COVID
View(s):Soul of a City, a photography exhibition and sale showcasing black and white photographs taken during the COVID pandemic in Kandy by Nadija Weeraratne, will be held today – Sunday, March 26 from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. at the Harold Peiris Gallery, Lionel Wendt, Colombo 7.
Coming from a business background, Nadija took up photography purely as a hobby. Each of the photographs captures moments of stillness alongside people and places in isolation. The photographs depict the impact of a global pandemic on individuals, a city, and homeless people on the streets.
Having been introduced to photography by his father at the age of 12, the turning point in his career came when author Carl Muller consented to a photoshoot. Muller later even used one of these photographs on the cover of one of his books.
Nadija’s early work includes a coffeetable book on the Kandy Esala Perahera.
