Thirty-nine Chinese were arrested yesterday by the Aluthgama Police on allegations of embezzling money from the bank accounts of people living in different countries.
The raid came after several embassies tipped off the police that a group suspected of embezzling money by hacking their bank accounts were staying at a tourist resort at Kaluwamodara in Aluthgama.
Several police teams raided the hotel and arrested the Chinese tourists on suspicion.
They were taken to the Aluthgama police in a private bus and the police also took into custody computers, expensive smartphones, and a large amount of cash.
Police initially could not record their statements as there was no interpreter. But last night, police said they found an interpreter, and statements were recorded.
Further investigations are underway by the Aluthgama Police and the Criminal Investigation Department. They are to be produced before a magistrate.
