Anyone can protest, but not disrupt law an order: President tells security forces

President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday declared that no one is entitled to engage in violent protests on the streets, but all political parties and people have the right to express their opinions or criticise him in a peaceful manner.

The president in a special address to the security forces at the Air Force base in Anuradhapura said that he would not allow anyone to disrupt the law and order once again while he remains president of the country.

The president acknowledged that the armed forces and police will continue to play a crucial role in achieving economic independence.

He said now that the International Monetary Fund agreement had been presented in Parliament it was to be seen whether parliamentarians had the courage to make the right decisions for the betterment of the country.

He said he would win the economic war similar to the armed forces successful fight against terrorism and establish economic independence in the country.

The president also elaborated that unlike wars of the past the wars of the future would be based on technology and knowledge and that the tri forces and police should be prepared to face such challenges.

The president pointed out that he is there only to do the right thing and not to carry out popular actions.
