Ferry service on course to begin, once Indian Shipping Ministry clearance is given

The ferry service between Kankesanthurai Port and Karaikal Port in Tamil Nadu will start as scheduled on April 29.
The groundwork for the project had been laid and was now near completion, Niranjan Nandakopan, Chairperson of the Indsri Ferry Service Pvt. Ltd. told the Sunday Times. The Sri Lanka Navy is currently engaged in the construction of Customs and Immigration buildings, as well as Departure and Arrival areas for passengers.
In 2016, the Indian Government agreed to provide USD 46 million to the Sri Lankan Government to construct infrastructure for the ferry service. However, the project was subsequently delayed. Another USD 16 million is needed to further deepen the Kankesanthurai Port and provide other facilities to accommodate larger ferries than the ones that will initially operate between the two countries. Initially, ferries will only be allowed to carry 120 passengers per trip six days a week. The ferry service will not operate on Sundays.
Mr Nandakopan said all clearances have been granted by the two governments to his company bar one. We are still waiting on the Indian Shipping Ministry clearance. We can start services once it is given,” he said.
