Irreplaceable Kalansuriya bids farewell
View(s):Veteran film actor Amarasiri Kalansuriya passed away last morning (April 1) at his residence in Ja-Ela at the age of 82.
Popularly known as Kalan, he appeared in Lankan cinema, theatre and television. He made his film debut alongside Vijaya Kumaratunga in Sugathapala Senarath Yapa’s Hanthane Kathawa. He was awarded the Sarasaviya Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1982, and the Sarasaviya and Presidential Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1986 for the film Pooja.
He was in Dharmasena Pathiraja’s Ahas Gawwa, Lester James Peris’s Akkara Paha and Ranjith Lal’s Nimwalalla.
Mr Kalansuriya made his mark as an outstanding actor after accepting an invitation from H D Premaratne to star in the film Apeksha in 1978. His second film Parithyagaya, won him more awards from the OCIC and Sarasaviya.
Some of his other prominent films include: Tharanga, Bambaru Avith, Anupama, Podi Malli, and Sagarayak Maeda. He won the Critics’ Award for his performance in Ahas Gawwa in 1974.
His remains lie at Jayaratne Parlour in Colombo. Cremation will be held tomorrow at the General Cemetery, Kanatte.
