CH and CR remain unbeaten at Centenary 7s

CH&FC and hosts CR&FC remained unbeaten in their Clubs segment of the CR&FC Centenary Rugby 7s while BWRC Australia and Army SC come out as first favourites to win the Women’s segment after the second day’s play yesterday.

Accordingly hosts CR will take on Havelocks in the first semi-final of the Cup/Plate segment while CH&FC will meet Kandy SC in the second qualifier. Both matches will take place after 1.00pm today after the day’s proceedings are set to kick off at 9.00am today with the schools qualifiers.

In the Bowl semi-finals Army will meet Navy at 12.20pm, followed by the second game between Air Force and Police.

The semi-finals of the Schools Cup segment will kick off from 11.00am with the first game between Royal and St. Joseph’s colleges, followed by the game between Trinity and St. Peter’s colleges. The Plate segment games will begin at 10.20am with D.S. Senanayake taking on Zahira in the first encounter, before the second game between Isipathana and Kingswood. The day will kick off at 9.00am with the Bowl segment games. The first game will be between Wesley and Piliyandala Central followed by the qualifier between Vidyartha and S. Thomas’ soon afterwards.

The remaining first round matches of the Women’s segment will be played in between these games. After the lunch break from 2.30pm onwards all finals will be played with the Cup finals of Women’s, Men’s and Schools expected to wind up the third and final day.

Yesterday, CH&FC, dishing out a fine performance after a long lapse as a unit, overcame Air Force (27-5), Havelocks (36-5) and Navy (36-0) to end the day on top of their group, while CR&FC handed a shocker to Kandy SC (21-19) before easily beating Police SC (19-0), following their thrilling 19-all draw against Army SC.

Kandy SC, who thrashed Police SC 38-0 in their first game, had to face a defeat in any format of rugby after a long lapse from the hands of the hosts, before regrouping to convincingly beat Army SC (31-5). Havelocks recorded two wins.

BWRC Australia and Army SC drew their first round games 19-all, and went on win the remaining two games and end the day undefeated while other teams – CR&FC, Air Force, Navy and Doha RFC – had mixed fortunes during the day.

The tournament, specially organised by CR&FC to celebrate their centenary year, will end today.
